DIY Leather Layered Chain Earrings

Hello! Welcome back to Collection W's jewelry blog!

Today I thought I'd do a D.I.Y leather earring tutorial. I just bought a bunch of leather scrap remnants from Michael's and felt inspired. I brainstormed for quite some time this morning on what I should do a tutorial on and finally came up with these earrings....

So without further ado,

D.I.Y GENUINE LEATHER LAYERED CHAIN EARRINGS!

Supplies you will need:
  • genuine leather scrap remnants (it doesn't matter what color. I used dark brown to make the ones in this tutorial.)
  • leather awl
  • jewelry pliers (I used bent nose and chain nose but needle nose will work just as well)
  • 10 jump rings (again color of your choice)
  • 3 different styles of necklace chain (color of your choice, I used antique gold figaro, cable and a wide cable chain
  • earring wires and backs
Alright to start off you are going to need some leather. I get mine from Michael's (they sell scrap remnants in a pretty large bag)
This is what it looks like. They also sell different colors of this; this time I chose gray and brown.
Alright so after your purchase your leather and get settled, take out a piece (of your choice) and cute two 6 in rectangles to start out with.

NOTE: I did burnish my leather before cutting it by wetting it and taking the end of my wooden awl and rubbing the fibers in every direction on both sides (wetted) and let it dry.

You can cut leather with regular scissors, but I highly suggest a very sharp cutting tool or a pair of scissors made to cut leather. This will make your life so much easier. The scissors I use are made for cutting leather specifically and are made of titanium. I got them at Walmart for around $20.

Alright so you have your two rectangles cut out, now just set it aside for a second. Get out your 3 different chains and jump rings.
For this next step, to get the "layered" look, I actually counted out the chain links. The numbers I did were 8, 14, and then on the last one I just eyed it. Do whatever you are comfortable with just be sure it is layered.

After you get your chain lengths all thought out and prepared take one of your jump rings and put it on the ends of all 3 chains. Take another jump ring after that and do the same to the other ends of the chains. It should look like this when you are done:

This photo also shows our next step, take another jump ring and connect the two previous jump rings you just worked with to it.

Now you are ready to pick back up one of your leather rectangles and slide your chain on to the rough side. Then you take your ends of the leather and fold them in half

When you pick up your leather ends it should look almost like you are done.

For your final steps first start by dotting a small mark to help you know where to stick your awl for your ear wire. (As pictured above.)

After you are done with that, stick your awl through both pieces of leather until you make a hole just big enough for another jump ring to fit through. Pull the awl out carefully and insert jump ring.

Finally add another small jump ring so your earrings hang right and add your ear wire and earring back. Do the other earring just the same as this one and TADA!

You have made a very cool, trendy pair of earrings!
