Which brings me into today's blog topic:
Here is a picture of a pair of earrings I have listed in my shop on Etsy. See how well the burnt orange contrast the blue??? This was taken on styrofoam spray painted.
I also like taking pictures of either natural wood or painted wood. The pictures above are pictures taken on an old, vintage, painted wooden drawer.
Here is a great picture of the styrofoam background again. See how it is textured????
Here are some examples of jewelry taken on copy paper. See how awesome it all looks?? I personally have no problem with doing this method, but if you want to be a little bit more creative, try choosing background props with a light color, like this piece of home decor I got for free:
Well if you have learned anything from reading this then go put it to action and watch your photo's transform. Photography is an art and takes patience and practice. Never give up!!!! You will succeed if you put your mind to it.

JEWELRY PHOTOGRAPHY TIPs
Alright so jewelry, from what I read and have experienced myself, is very difficult to photograph. If you have ever tried to take pictures of your jewelry or tried to model your jewelry and take pictures, then you know that this is true. I take pictures of all the jewelry I sell and I model it myself too, and let me just tell ya'll it is HARD AS HELL. I have only been taking pictures of my jewelry for about 6 months now and I am no where near professional or perfect. BUT, I do not think I am completely terrible at it so today I will share with you some tips and tricks I utilize when I am taking photos of my jewelry!
1. ALWAYS AND I MEAN ALWAYS TAKE YOUR PHOTOS IN SUNLIGHT
Have you ever taken a picture of yourself under fluorescent lighting? If you have, didn't you just think to yourself "wow I'm the ugliest human being alive"??? Well here is the good news, you are probably not the ugliest human being alive, it is just the lighting. Fluorescent light makes photos (especially on smart phones) looked washed out and sometimes grainy. This is the same rule of thumb for taking photos of jewelry. Fluorescent light makes colors looked washed out and just plain ugly. Try taking your jewelry outside around evening time or at sunrise and take some pictures then. The natural light makes a difference, a noticeable one. If you hate going outside, then try taking photo's around a window with some natural light. Here are some examples of photos in fluorescent lighting and then natural sunlight:
fluorescent |
natural |
Just by looking at these two photos you can obviously tell the natural one looks more professional and it is easier to look at. That is what breaking a little sweat outside does for your photos.
2. NEVER USE FLASH EVER
Alright so I want you to scroll back up to the pictures and look at how grainy and washed out and basically all the things in number that I talked about on that photo. Flash is going to just make your photos harder to look at. When you are photographing jewelry, you want to get every detail. Flash will cancel that out. So I repeat, DON'T TURN ON THAT FLASH!
3. USE A LIGHT BACKGROUND FOR BRIGHTER PICTURES
So if you sell jewelry, you know that customers are highly influenced as to whether they even click on a certain product or not by the first photo. Customers are not going to click on a photo that is dark and hard to see. So what I recommend is taking photo's with a light background without a bunch of distractions. A lot of people take photo's of their product on just plain copy paper, and yes it will make your photo's look better. If you are a seller on Etsy like me, you should probably get a little bit more creative than the mainstream copy paper idea and choose a prop with a light background without any noise. What I like to do is get a piece of styrofoam and spray paint that with a light color. Not only does it give you a nice colored background, but the styrofoam actually hardens when it is spraypainted, leaving a rough texture that is not too noisy and wont distract the main focus, your jewelry.
I also like taking pictures of either natural wood or painted wood. The pictures above are pictures taken on an old, vintage, painted wooden drawer.
